3 Things you might not know about Vancouver Airport

Vancouver airport

I like to get to the airport with plenty of time to spare. Especially when the airport has free wifi. One thing about Vancouver airport is that if you are visiting the USA or are just transiting trough you have to go through immigration there in the airport before you even get on your flight. I admit I did not know this the first time around a few years ago and I almost ended up being late for my flight due to the process taking so long. However this time I was well informed and knew what would await me. What ended up coming as a pleasant surprise was when I had finished going to security a member of staff at immigration asked me what passport I had. I was all ready to join the long non USA/Canada line only to be told that due to the fact I have an ESTA I did not need to wait in the normal immigration line but got to go and use one of the fancy kiosks that US and Canadian citizens get to use which speeds up the whole process immensely. It has to be said in my travels it is hit or miss as to whether i get an airport that has these and not just the Global Entry kiosk so this is a big plus point for Vancouver airport in my book!

I love to try and keep hydrated during flights which is why I always keep a refillable water bottle on me

However every now and then I would like to drink something other than water on my flights. Recently I found myself at Vancouver airport about to get on a 5 hour international flight where I knew that the “meal service” would actually consist of me having the option to buy a snack box . This was fine I had already visited the lounge for breakfast and had picked up a yogurt and humus to eat along with the other snack I almost always have in my bag. I was looking around and knew there was an airport store that sold drinks. I went to look at some vitamin water and noticed the price was around $3.59 CAD excluding GST which is normal airport prices as they know they have a captive audience. Then I looked around some more and noticed that there were some vending machines in a corner. Three of them in fact that had a range of drinks as well as snacks. The great thing about this was they had the same vitamin water for only $2.75 CAD including tax! So I dug out my little bag of leftover Canadian change and used up most of it to get my drink for way less than if I had brought it in the store.

What happens if your flight gets you in too early for you to check in to your accommodation

Don’t stay in the departure area! When you pick up your luggage you will probably see a Tim Hortons and another restaurant/bar and think that these are your only options while waiting it out. I recently had a flight that got me in at midday but I could not enter my Airbnb until 3pm which left me with a couple of hours on my hands. After spending 30 mins catching up on email, I started to plan the rest of my day and I realized that I would need to eat before going to my Airbnb. As much as i love Timmy’s it just was not going to hit the spot this time. So i grabbed my luggage and went exploring. If I can I like to check out where I have to check in for future flights or just what is around. This lead me to the arrivals section of the airport where there were two separate food courts where you could get around even if you had a cart. Tables where you could plug in and eat and even better a viewing deck accessible by elevator where you could go and watch planes and find out more about the airport. Result! This was a much better place to hang out for a couple of hours until i could get my head down for a nap
